Japan after World War II was going through a variety of changes. And though it would become one of the richest and most industrialized countries in the world, during the 50’s it was facing a lot of poverty and crime. Theft and illegal activity were rampant as society was adjusting to all the stresses that were put on it after the war.

During this time, a man named Genzo Kurita would end up being one of Japan’s most horrific serial killers in history. With a history of poverty and neglect, he would grow up to be a troubled man with a history of violence and theft. He would target vulnerable people and take whatever he wanted.

His appetite for robbery, sexual assault, and violence would escalate until he had killed 8 known women and children and possibly more unknown victims. What added to the repulsiveness to his crime was that he would not only murder victims but then sexually assault their bodies after they died. With little disregard for life, he even threw little children off cliffs because they stood in the way of his target.

Who was Genzo Kurita? How did he begin his life of violence and crime? How did he get caught and what happened to him? This is the story of one of Japan’s most notorious serial killers Genzo Kurita.

Genzo’s Upbringing

Japanese Wikipedia spells out the troubles that Genzo when through in his childhood. Born in the north of Japan in Akita Prefecture in 1926, Genzo was the third child of a family of 12 brothers. His father was a fisherman, who due to illness was no longer able to work leaving his mother to support the entire household.

Being a child of 12 siblings was not easy and despite their mother trying to do her best to fulfill the duties of a caregiver as well as be the breadwinner of the family, Genzo was often left without much supervision or affection. He later told police that it was during this time as a child that he met an old man who told him women…
