This story, though bizarre, is unfortunately not unique. There have been many instances of children being abandoned, abused, left alone, and left to fend for themselves. With dysfunctional families, poverty, and lack of support or checks, many children are abused and ignored by parents and left to suffer.
In this true story that was later turned into a popular movie, a Japanese mother decided to leave all her children at home while living with her boyfriend. What makes the matter worse is that all the children were never registered so had no official record in the Japanese system, and were fathered by different men.
Without a father, schooling, friends, or any adults around, the children were left with just a small amount of money the mother sent. When the police finally entered the apartment, they found a decomposed bodies of a child hidden in suitcases and three malnourished children. One other child was missing.
How did the children die? Why didn’t the mother stay with the children? Where were the fathers of the children? How did these children go unnoticed for 9 months? This is the sad story of a woman who abandoned her children and gave up her duties as a mother.
The Mother
Although this case was reported extensively in media both in Japan and worldwide, the identity of the mother and the children were never disclosed. For this article, I will give the mother a pseudonym as Keiko.
