Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been a variety of problems that go beyond getting infected from the virus. Lockdowns have caused many people to lose their jobs, businesses have closed, families have been separated, travel has become harder. Depression, suicide, mental illness, isolation, all resulting from the stress of these times.

And according to the United Nations, “Stay-at-home measures are compounding perpetrators’ use of mechanisms of power and control. Unemployment, economic instability, and stress may lead offenders to feel a loss of that power, which in turn may exacerbate the frequency and severity of their abusive behavior.”

This story is about a man named Junji Matsumoto who lives in Fukuoka, Japan. In his late 50s, he was unemployed, caring for his parents, and in June 2021, decided to murder his elderly parents. How did he kill them? Why did he decide he had had enough of caring for them? How was he caught and what happened to him?
