What makes serial killers tick? We as a society are always fascinated by serial killers like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. Why did they kill so many people? What was their motive and how did they feel? Were they killers from birth or did something in their life cause them to murder?

Serial killers are not only a part of the American crime story but serial killers exist in every country and in every culture. They are also not a new phenomenon as history reports mass killers as long as people have kept records.

Japan is no different. Despite being known internationally as a country of low crime, having almost no gun violence, and being safe enough for kids to commute to school every day alone, there is also a dark side of Japan.

This story is about a serial killer named Kiyotaka Katsuta. Despite having a relatively normal life, he sexually assaulted, robbed, and killed his victims throughout the 1970s and 80s.

His run lasted for more than a decade before he was finally caught. And though he might have been responsible for up to 22 deaths, he was only charged with eight murders. Why did he have such a violent streak? Who were his victims? How did he kill them? And how did he…
